Background:Datasupportingtheroleofspeci?cenvironmentalexposuresinthedevelopmentofASarescarse.Microbialexposure,bothintheformofinfectionsandgut?ora,hasbeenimplicatedinthepathogenesisofseveralspondyloarthritisrelatedconditions,suchasreactivearthritisandin?ammatoryboweldisease(IBD).Gutdysbiosishasalsobeenrecognizedinankylosingspondylitis,butitisnotknownifthisisaresultofthediseaseoroccursbeforediseaseonset.

Objectives:Todetermineifinfectionsduringchildhood,primarilygut,urogenitalandrespiratorytractinfections(RTI)aswellasappendicitis,predictadiagnosisofAS.

Methods:Thisisaregisterbasedstudyusingseveralnationalregisters.Allindividualshaving≥1visittospecializedhealthcarewithanassociatedICD-codeforASwereidenti?edinthenationalhealthcareregister,–.Foreachindexcase5matchedcontrols(sex,age,county)wereretrievedfromthepopulationregister.CasesandcontrolswerelinkedtotheNationalPatientRegister(NPR)toidentifyhospitalizationwithanICD-codeindicatinganinfection(gastrointestinal,urogenital,respiratorytractorappendicitis)atanageof0–16years.
